Clients rely on John’s responsiveness and pragmatic nature to help them solve their legal issues. They trust his value-added advice and ability to see all of the options on the table. These longtime clients— principally financial institutions— trust that John will counsel them on creditors' rights, as well as receiverships, bankruptcy, real property and general commercial litigation matters. John’s clients appreciate his breadth of experience which covers civil litigation in state and federal courts, religious institutions, and employment law. John has extensive experience in loan documentation and transactional work.
A shareholder with the firm, John has handled loan documentation for several multi-million dollar loan transactions. He is also experienced in representing creditors and committees in significant Chapter II bankruptcy cases.
Prior to joining Tobin & Tobin, this fourth-generation native of San Francisco served as Law Clerk to the Honorable Ira A. Brown, Presiding Judge of the Superior Court, City and County of San Francisco, in 1983. John served on the Editorial Advisory Board for the first edition of California Causes of Action, published in 1998 by James Publishing, Inc. He is a member of the Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Section of the Bar Association of San Francisco.
Personal satisfaction and helping others are a few reasons why John has served as an officer or director of a number of not-for-profit, community-oriented organizations in San Francisco, including St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation, St. Thomas More Society of San Francisco, the Arc-San Francisco, Order of Malta Oakland Clinic, and The Guardsmen, among others.
Not one to shy away from public speaking, John has lectured on bankruptcy and labor and employment issues, including protection of trade secrets and the “inevitable disclosure” doctrine for various seminars and associations in recent years. John has also presented sexual harassment training seminars for employer clients.
During his leisure time, John enjoys golfing, taking photos, listening to music, traveling, swimming, skiing and attending athletic events at UC Berkeley.
