Practice Areas

Larry knows that nonprofits and faith-based organizations are not like ordinary corporations. Of-counsel to the firm, he is in his third decade of helping these organizations – charities, churches and religious groups – with their special needs, including corporate, fundraising, taxes, property, trusts and estates, human resources and constitutional-law issues. Larry has served on teams working on such diverse matters as legislative exemptions for church buildings from involuntary landmarking and blocking government attempts to impose illegal property taxes on nonprofits. He often helps his clients avoid problems in the first place by developing corporate policies and best-practices, and then counseling them on compliance and operations. But when there are disputes – everything from church bells and bake sales to constitutional law, from hiring and firing employees to wills and trusts – he has successfully represented them in all aspects of litigation, including settlements, mediations, arbitrations, trials and appeals.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Larry was a magazine editor. When not practicing law, he has been a teacher of history and is a published author in the field of church and medieval history. A past-president of the St. Thomas More Society of San Francisco and a knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, he has served on several charitable boards, and has lectured on the subjects of church-state relationships, the legal status of clergy, and the internal administration of religious organizations.

Larry is a member of the San Francisco Bar Association, the Western and National Diocesan Attorneys Association, the American Catholic Historical Association, the American Historical Association, and the Medieval Academy of America.
