Weintraub Tobin Changes Management Structure to Handle Growth

March 12 2015

By Kathy Robertson, Sacramento Business Journal

Growing at a steady clip — now with five offices statewide — Sacramento law firm Weintraub Tobin launched a new management structure this week.

In recognition that the job of managing partner is now too big for one person who still wants to practice law, the firm has split the job between two lawyers.

Mike Kvarme still has the title, but will focus on external management issues such as strategic planning, marketing and lateral hiring. Sherry Bragg, who joined the firm last January when her Newport Beach business law and litigation firm joined Weintraub Tobin, will focus on internal operations and practice management as the new administrative managing partner.

Weintraub Tobin has 76 lawyers across offices in Sacramento, San Francisco, Beverly Hills, Newport Beach and a small San Diego office that opened in January. It’s Sacramento’s sixth-largest law firm in Business Journal rankings by local attorney count.

“As we have expanded — now all the way down to San Diego — not having somebody to handle things in Southern California was difficult,” Kvarme said. “If I had something going on, we had to scramble. With this change, there are greater odds one of us will be free,” Kvarme added. “This is about firm continuity and making sure we don’t miss any beats.”

The change also provides opportunities to play to each others’ strengths. Kvarme likes strategic thinking more than practice management, but ultimately, it will come down to “which one of us is best at it and which one of us has the time to do it,” he said.

The current board structure will stay in place. The job split is an effort to integrate the firm as it continues to grow. “We are now many firms, not just Sacramento centric,” Bragg said. “This has to do with growing in the same direction.”
