WT Clients: Naomi Novik’s Novel ‘A Deadly Education’ Set for Film Adaptation

Universal Pictures is set to adapt to film the bestselling novel “A Deadly Education,” the first title in the Scholomance Trilogy by Weintraub client Naomi Novik.

The film will be directed by Meera Menon (Ms. Marvel) with Emily Carmichael (Jurassic World Dominion) and Shantha Susman adapting the screenplay. Todd Lieberman (Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Wonder) and David Hoberman (The Fighter, Wonder) are producers.

WT Deals: Toast News Network Picked Up by Dear Media

Podcast network Toast News Network, which includes the popular podcast The Morning Toast, will be added to the lineup of shows under Dear Media.

The network, founded by WT clients Claudia and Jackie Oshry, features original shows and podcasts from actors and influencers, such as Josh Peck, Lauren Elizabeth, and Shannon Ford. Dear Media will also be making an investment in the Oshry sisters’ cocktail brand, Spritz Society.

Weintraub Tobin helped to broker the deal, along with WME. Claudia and Jackie Oshry are represented by Weintraub shareholder Jessica Marlow.

CFRA Family Leave and California Paid Sick Leave Expanded to Employees’ “Designated Persons”

Existing California law provides employees with the right to take paid and unpaid leaves to care for certain family members when they need the employee’s assistance to obtain medical treatment, diagnosis, or preventative care.  On September 29, 2022, Governor Newsom signed into law AB 1041, which adds a “designated person” to the list of individuals for whom an employee may take California Family Rights Act or use paid sick leave.
