Upcoming Seminar: The Complex Web of Federal, State and Local Leaves of Absence Laws

Download: Flyer – Complex Web of Federal, State and Local Leaves of Absence Laws (1739109).PDF

Summary of Program
Employers continue to grapple with this very difficult area of employment law. It is not enough to focus on just one law when an employee is unable to work or is absent from the workplace due to some medical condition or injury suffered by the employee or his or her family member. Instead, employers need to understand and comply with how the courts, and various federal and state regulatory agencies, are interpreting the interplay between a number of laws like the FMLA/CFRA, ADA/FEHA, PDL, USERRA, and workers’ compensation. This seminar is designed to help employers and HR professionals understand this complex interplay and to provide some practical guidance on administering leaves and absences.

Program Highlights

  • New Regulations and Agency Directives.
  • What Does Each Law Provide: A Summary of the Statutes and Regulations.
  • A Discussion of the Difference Between “Statutory Leaves” and “Wage Replacement Benefits.”
  • Under What Circumstances the Statutory Leaves and/or Wage Replacement Benefits May Overlap and How to Evaluate and Determine the Employee’s Entitlements and the Employer’s Obligations Under Each Law.
  • The Importance of Engaging in the “Interactive Process.”
  • What are the Courts saying? Recent case law.
  • Effective Documentation: Policies, Leave Administration Documents, and Medical Certifications.

Weintraub Tobin Raises Money for American Heart Association

For a third year in a row, Weintraub Tobin is working to raise funds for cardiovascular diseases and stroke by partaking in the American Heart Association Heart Walk on Saturday, September 21 at William Land Park.

Our attorneys and staff work hard during the summer months to gear up for the walk, which raises the dollars needed to fund life-saving research and initiatives in our local community. Each year, the firm thinks of unique and creative ways to solicit donations for the cause – from firm potlucks and bake sales to a vendor fair in the Wells Fargo lobby and an annual pancake breakfast. The firm raised $8,000 in 2011 and $9,500 in 2012, with the hopes of bringing in even more for the cause this year.

Attorney Jim Clarke serves as the firm’s Heart Walk captain.

Three Weintraub Tobin Attorneys Named “Best of the Bar”

Weintraub Tobin Chediak Coleman Grodin is pleased to announce that three of our attorneys have been named “Best of the Bar” by the Sacramento Business Journal. Congratulations to shareholders Gary Bradus, Chris Chediak and Ed Corey.

The Business Journal’s inaugural “Best of the Bar” list was created to “recognize local attorneys who have been nominated by their peers and vetted by a panel of their peers, according to the Business Journal. Attorneys are nominated by their peers, and they may not nominate themselves. The first “Best of the Bar’ was published in 2002 in the Kansas City Business Journal.

Asked what professional accomplishments are they most proud of, the attorneys responded:

Gary Bradus: “The balance I have achieved in assisting businesses and business owners in achieving their goals while being a husband to a lovely wife and a father to three beautiful children.”

Chris Chediak: “Our success in maintaining a top quality independent firm rooted in Sacramento that has grown in a down economy.”

Ed Corey: “Being elected by my peers to serve as chair of the California State Bar Trusts and Estates Section.”
