On Wednesday, July 13, The Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Barristers Club presented an MCLE webinar discussing reshaping biased narratives within the legal system.
The event featured lawyers representing domestic violence survivors, criminal defendants, and those involved in the foster care system to explore how biased narratives emerge, their impact on clients, and the specific steps attorneys can take to change these narratives.
Weintraub attorney Jacqueline Simonovich and Tina Butoiu of the Wikimedia Foundation moderated the discussion, which covered:
- Why do attorneys choose certain representations?
- In what ways are crime narratives biased against communities of color?
- How do our biases contribute to how we tell clients’ stories?
- How do biased narratives perpetuate systemic bias in the legal system?
