Women in Leadership at Weintraub Tobin Highlighted on International Women’s Day

Alison Geddes Presents at the 2024 CLA Real Property Law Retreat

On Saturday, March 9th, Weintraub attorney Alison Geddes presented at the California Lawyers Association 2024 Real Property Law Retreat. Preparing Your Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Just Got a Little Easier – CalOSHA Issues a Model Plan & Other Resources

If you’re a California employer, I hope the following is not news to you.  Pursuant to SB 553, most employers in California are required to put in place an effective Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (“WVPP”) by July 1, 2024. SB 553 added section 6401.9 to the California Labor Code to address the requirements for a compliant WVPP. 

Important Notice Regarding the Corporate Transparency Act Filing Requirements (Updated 3/4/2024)

On March 1, 2024, a lower Alabama federal court held that the Corporate Transparency Act, which requires certain businesses to file a BOI Report with FinCEN that includes information about their beneficial owners, is unconstitutional. Importantly, this ruling DOES NOT affect the legal obligation of entities formed in California, Nevada, or Delaware (among other states) to file their BOI Report within the timeframes specified in the chart below at this time.  We are monitoring the development of this and similar court actions across the nation and will continue to provide information about them to those who have indicated a desire to receive this information from us.

WT Deals: Zosia Mamet Set To Co-Star in “The Undertaker’s Children”

Weintraub client Zosia Mamet is set to star alongside Ann Dowd in the upcoming horror thriller “The Undertaker’s Children” from producer and seller The Exchange. Inspired by true events, the film tells the story of a girl and her younger brother who are sent to live with their distant relative, a reclusive undertaker, after becoming orphans. Production is due to start filming in late spring of 2024.

And Again, Abstract Ideas are Not Patentable!

The Federal Circuit Court of Appeals has struck down many patents on the grounds that they are invalid as directed to an abstract idea, relying on the Supreme Court’s Alice decision.  In In re Elbaum (Fed. Cir. 12/20/2023) 2023 U.S. App. LEXIS 33719, the Federal Circuit affirmed the Patent Trial and Appeal Board’s rejection of the claims in a patent application as directed to an abstract idea.
