WT Clients: “Dungeon Crawler Carl” Series Lands at Peacock

Weintraub client Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl is officially in development as a live-action television series at Peacock.

Based on Dinniman’s popular LitRPG book series, the project will be written and executive produced by Chris Yost, with Seth MacFarlane executive producing under his Fuzzy Door Productions banner. Dinniman will also serve as an executive producer alongside Erica Huggins.

The series follows a post-apocalyptic world where survivors are forced to compete in a deadly, televised intergalactic game show, blending dark humor with high-stakes fantasy.

Matt Dinniman is represented by Weintraub Tobin partner Matt Sugarman.

Tropes Aren’t Theft: What Freeman v. Wolff Teaches About Substantial Similarity in YA Fantasy Fiction

A recent decision from the Southern District of New York offers one of the most detailed modern analyses of substantial similarity in the increasingly popular young adult fantasy/“romantasy” space.

The case arose from a dispute between an unpublished author and the creator of a commercially successful paranormal romance series. The plaintiff alleged that her manuscripts—shared years earlier with a literary agent—were copied in the defendants’ novels. The court, however, granted summary judgment for the defendants, concluding that no reasonable jury could find substantial similarity of protectable expression.

The opinion is notable not just for its outcome, but for its methodical breakdown of what copyright law does not protect.

WT Clients: David Mamet’s ‘Speed the Plow’ Moves Forward as Feature Film

Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet is moving forward with the feature adaptation of his Tony Award-winning play Speed the Plow, firming up its cast as the project heads into production. The film will star Anthony Mackie, Ben Mendelsohn, Emily Alyn Lind, and Oscar nominee Sharon Stone, with production set to begin February 18, 2026 in Atlanta. International sales will launch at the European Film Market in Berlin.

Mamet will direct from his own script, with the film diverging in part from the original stage play. Set at the fictional American Prestige Studios, the story follows a junior executive unexpectedly elevated to head of production as he navigates studio politics alongside a seasoned insider, an ambitious temp, and a volatile movie star.
